When Windows 95 first came out, I remember being fascinated with those little icons sitting down in the system tray. In the early days, most stuff was still 16-bit apps left over from Windows 3.1 which, obviously, did not utilize this new area. However, as more and more 32-bit apps were developed, more of them began to use it and one day I wondered, "How much crap can I get down there?" I began collecting.

The Programs
To the right is a picture of a tray that's loaded with all the stuff described below. Most people have their taskbar on the bottom of the screen, but that's just because their computer came like that. You'll find that putting it on the left side is much more convenient--- it gives you more vertical room to work on documents and view webpages. Anyway, that's beside the point. Enjoy the tray icon descriptions...

Volume Control
The standard Windows volume control icon. Everybody should have this, unless you don't have a soundcard.

Task Scheduler
The Windows task scheduler is present in certain builds of IE4 and in all Windows 98 installations. It lets you run any program at any specified time or interval.

Power Manager
This little icon shows up in Windows if you're running on a laptop or have power management turned on for something else.

VShield
One of McAfee's virus scan products. It comes with the Windows 98 Plus pack too. Author: McAfee

Mobile Devices
All Windows CE based handheld or palm-sized PCs that connect to Windows through this Mobile Devices interface.

Modem
The Windows modem indicator shows when the modem is sending and receiving.

OmniHTTPd
OmniHTTPd web server. Author: Omnicron

Display Properties
Formerly known as QuickRes, a popular Windows power toy, this feature is now available in Windows 98 as a Display Properties tray icon.

Deluxe CD Player
The Deluxe CD Player in the Windows 98 Plus pack lets you pause/play and switch tracks from the tray.

ICQ
Internet chat client. "I-Seek-You" Author: Mirabilis

AOL Instant Messenger
Internet chat client. Author: AOL

Resource Meter
Monitors your system and upon double clicking, shows system, user, and GDI resources.

Netscape Mail
Netscape's new mail notification icon. Author: Netscape

Outlook Mail

ATI Display Properties
Systems with ATI video cards often have this icon, letting users read help or adjust display settings. Author: ATI

Camio Viewer
Some image viewing program that comes with the PhotoPC 600 digital camera. Shows pictures that are in the camera before downloading them.

WinGo
WinGo lets you make folder aliases that you can access from the system tray. Author: MetaProducts

Connectix VideoPhone
Connectix VideoPhone online directory icon, sends your dynamic IP address to ULS server so people can call you using Connectix VideoPhone Author: Connecix Corporation

Windows95 Dial-Up Networking
Little lights in the computer monitors light up to show modem activity. Author: Microsoft

Diamond InControl
Adjusts settings of Diamond video cards Author: Diamond Multimedia

Netscape Mail Notification
A little program that will check for mail even when Netscape isn't started. Author: Netscape Communications

RealPlayer
Shows that the RealPlayer is in memory and ready to play RealAudio and RealVideo files. Author: RealNetworks

Intel RSX3D
Intel RSX3D Peripheral Configuration, shows up and allows you to choose some 3D sound preferences. Author: Intel

TrayDay
Shows the current day of the month in the tray. Really useful in that you don't have to hover over the clock for the date ToolTip to pop up. Author: MJMSoft Design

TrayText

Download Manager

An Internet buddy list and instant message program. Author: Yahoo

PowWow
