Exercise VIII

1) He will pick up the ladder. (Phrasal verb.)

It can't take a pronominal object: (p. 99)

*He will pick up it.

But it can take a pronominal object when preposition is moved to the end: (p. 99)

He will pick it up.

Or when any NP is before the preposition:

He will pick the ladder up.

The preposition can't be changed to another one, like its antonym: (distribution argument)

*He will pick down the ladder.

Movement's not possible: (123)(b)

*Up the ladder he will pick.

Coordination isn't possible (123)(e) because "up the ladder" isn't a preposition:

*He will pick up the ladder and down the bucket.

2) He will climb up the ladder. (Prepositional verb.)

It can take a pronominal object: (p. 99)

He will climb up it.

And it can't take a pronominal object when preposition is moved to the end: (p. 99)

*He will climb it up.

The preposition can't be moved after the object NP:

*He will climb the ladder up.

The preposition can be changed: (distribution argument)

He will climb down the ladder.

He will climb around the ladder.

He will climb beside the ladder.

Movement's possible: (123)(b)

Up the ladder he will climb.

Coordination is possible (123)(e) because "up the ladder" is a preposition here:

He will climb up the ladder and down the fire escape.
