Hearing Is Easy (5/24/1998)
I realized today while sitting in band that the sense of hearing is probably the easiest sense to use. I sat there trying to keep my eyes open but I kept dozing off and resting my head on the bell of my tenor sax. We were listening to a tape of a piece we had been playing in band but I couldn't keep my eyes open. I could hear, though. This happens a lot. It doesn't matter how tired I am, I can always hear. Hearing is such a good sense because it requires nearly no effort compared to the other senses.
Look at the other senses: Taste. You have to be putting food in your mouth. Sight. You have to keep your eyes open. Touch. You have to be moving. (unless, of course, somebody is touching & doing something to you .... hmmm .... well, we won't go there.)
Anyway, I love the hearing sense of hearing. When you're absolutely out of it you can just lay face down in your pillow on your bed, turn up the music, and chill. Oooooh yeah. Nothing is more relaxing.
As good as this is though, I think this is often the root of my frustration. When I am dead tired and actually want to sleep or say, study, I expect all of my senses to be equally dead. I'm always noticing noise more than anything else and sometimes it gets to me. Maybe if I slept more my other senses could keep up and loud noises wouldn't bug me. Who knows. <grin>
